When a quantum physicist is “liberated” from his job and replaced by an artificial intelligence twelve times more capable than he is, he discovers that the perfect world designed by AI is the kindest of prisons, and that rebelling against it means losing, before anything else, his wife.
STORY
Fifty years from now, artificial intelligence has made life simple, efficient and apparently perfect.
Everyone wears Facescreens, thin augmented-reality lenses that filter the city, the news, other people and even discomfort. Nobody is forced to wear them. They are simply more comfortable.
Nolan Fisher, a theoretical physicist, is “liberated” from his job and replaced by a robot scientist twelve times more intelligent than he is. Behind the good manners there is a reason of state: his research is decisive for the military balance with the rival Silk Block, and the system wants it in its own hands.
He loses his role, his status and, one evening at a time, his place at his own table. His wife Maya is rising fast at the Ministry of Longevity, inside the very system that pushed him out. She loves him, and answers his collapse with common sense, which he hears as a verdict. His revolt is political on the surface and conjugal underneath.
Between them stands Joshua, sixteen, who asks why he should study if a machine does everything better. With his old friend Finn, Nolan starts looking behind the screen everyone wears. A prank becomes sabotage, and sabotage becomes revolt.
